CONTEXTUAL LENS

Black Is King is a visual album by Beyoncé, released through Disney+. It mirrors the narrative of The Lion King, and retells the journey through music, symbolism, and rich visual storytelling. The film moves through landscapes, couture, and choreography. This moodboard is inspired by Black is King.

DESIGN INTERPLAY

The bed holds sculptural weight and warm geometry, it acts like a centerpiece while still appreciating the room. The walnut dresser adds rhythm and contrast, while the artistic chair disrupts symmetry with intention. Materials used such as rope, veneer, and jute sparks an ancestral line through the design.

The palette found its voice as the space unfolded. The bed arrived first, then the chair, then the dresser.  Each bringing its own colorful bubble. But with the bold textures already embedded in the B, C, and É, (which were Beyonce’s own striking gowns) mixing it up was essential. That’s where the background rugs entered. Reoriented, softened, and shifted in perspective to guide your gaze inward. Not loudly, but rather gently.

ORIGIN NOTES

It started with a pendant. A sculptural and quietly divine pendant. Saved on Pinterest and held in the back of my mind like a secret. It reminded me of Black Is King, a film where story is told through surface, where ancestry is reflected in texture, form, and symbol.

I was drawn in not just by the visuals, but by the way narrative was told through texture and rhythm.
From there, the bed, the dresser and the sculptural chair arrived not as props, but as actors in the scene. Each choice became a line in the script, shaped by a desire to honor that same balance you see in the film.

OLIVARIUM is a place where design becomes narrative.
This was the first one.
This was Beyoncé.
